Reading Notes: King Arthur, Part B

(Sir Galahad and his angels; source: Wikipedia)

Plot:

  • Sir Galahad traveled until he reached a White Abbey where he met two other knights. When he asked them what adventure they sought, they explained that there was a shield in this Abbey that would kill or injure any man who wore it within three days.
  • Sir Galahad decides to try his hand with the shield because he doesn't have one. A monk showed the knights the shield and explained that only the worthiest knight in the world could carry it.
  • One of the knights, King Bagdegamus, went first and set out on a horse with his squire in tow. On his way, he met a knight in white armor and they engaged in a fight which left Bagdegamus injured. The white knight bade the squire to give the shield to Galahad because he was the only one worthy of carrying it.
  • The squire took Bagdegamus to a monastery for treatment and then returned to the Abbey where he gave Galahad the shield and told him what happened.
  • Galahad set out with his horse and came upon the white knight. They bowed to each other and the knight told Galahad of the shield's origin. Then Galahad and his squire returned to the Abbey.
  • The monks of they Abbey greeted Galahad with great relief and excitement and told him of a tomb from which there came a terrible noise.
  • Galahad went to the graveyard and opened the tomb, letting out a dark human-like figure. The figure claimed that there were too many angels around Galahad for him to approach.
  • Upon inspection, Galahad claimed that the man in the grave was a false Christian man and told the monks to remove the body.
